2018 Boot the Braids

Join UF students and organizations as we stand with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers in their fight to call on Wendy's to join the Fair Food Program.

It's time to pull back the curtain on Wendy's shady auditing practices and fake supplier Code of Conduct!

Inspired by the Coalition of Immokalee Workers' longstanding tradition of using popular theater and education to agitate and organize farmworkers and consumers, we're making the call for allies to put on theater pieces as part of their street actions!

Other ways that you can get involved is by hosting a teach-in at your campus, congregation or community center — and posting about the Wendy's Boycott on social media. Raising our voices together with CIW, we'll declare that farmworkers should not have to surrender their dignity for the right to put food on their families’ tables!

The National Week of Action begins Monday, October 22 and goes until Sunday, October 28, but we will have several events throughout October and November that you can participate. Check out this page, the Chispas Facebook page and the BTB Facebook page for updates on our next event. If you have any questions or want more resources to plan an action, get in touch with us at organize@sfalliance.org.

BTB Presents: Hear our Silence

11/2018
President Fuchs: UF students demand Wendy’s removal from our campus!

The Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW), an internationally celebrated human rights organization, has been at the forefront of combating workplace abuses in U.S. agriculture for over 25 years. The CIW’s world- renowned Fair Food Program has finally put an end to sexual harassment and assault, modern slavery and wage theft for tens of thousands of workers by harnessing the purchasing power of more than a dozen of the world’s largest retail food companies through legally-binding agreements, including all of the major fast-food brands.

All except Wendy’s.

For over five years, hundreds of thousands of farmworkers and consumers have demanded verifiable protections against sexual violence and other human rights abuses in Wendy’s supply chain through the Fair Food Program. This summer, bowing to massive consumer pressure in the national Wendy’s Boycott, the fast-food giant announced its intention to move its purchases away from Mexico’s abusive tomato industry to greenhouse operations in the U.S. and Canada. This shift in sourcing doesn’t excuse Wendy’s from its duty to respect workers’ rights... it only puts Wendy’s leaders back where they started.

We refuse to let the University of Florida - one of the top agricultural schools in the country - off the hook for doing business with a company that tolerates human rights abuses in its supply chain!

UF students are joining young people across the country to denounce Wendy’s blatant disregard for farmworkers’ rights – and hold our university accountable for its complicity in sexual violence and modern slavery in the fields. The Boot the Braids campaign at UF is a student-led effort to remove Wendy’s from campus until the fast-food company joins the award-winning Fair Food Program.

Join the growing movement to Boot the Braids from UF to send the message to Wendy’s that sexual violence and exploitation have no place on our campuses or in our food system and to call on UF TO HEAR OUR SILENCE!
